Tour Overview

Embark on an unforgettable journey through time as you explore the magnificent wonders of ancient Egypt on the Luxor’s Highlights Day Tour. This comprehensive excursion takes you to some of the most iconic sites in Luxor, allowing you to immerse yourself in the rich history and architectural marvels of one of the world’s oldest civilizations.

This tour focuses on five key locations:

  1. The Valley of the Kings
  2. El Deir el-Bahari (Temple of Queen Hatshepsut)
  3. The Colossi of Memnon
  4. Karnak Temple Complex
  5. Luxor Temple

Each site offers a unique glimpse into the grandeur of ancient Egypt, from the intricate tomb paintings in the Valley of the Kings to the colossal statues at Karnak Temple. As you traverse both the East and West Banks of the Nile, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the architectural prowess, artistic skills, and religious beliefs of the ancient Egyptians.

Luxor, often referred to as the world’s greatest open-air museum, was once the site of the ancient city of Thebes – the power center of Egypt during the New Kingdom period (1550-1070 BCE). The city served as the capital of Egypt for centuries and was dedicated to the god Amun. Today, the modern city of Luxor is built upon layers of ancient history, making it a treasure trove for archaeology enthusiasts and history buffs alike.

The Valley of the Kings

Your day begins with a journey to the West Bank of Luxor and the famed Valley of the Kings. This ancient necropolis served as the final resting place for the pharaohs and powerful nobles of the New Kingdom for nearly 500 years.

As you descend into the valley, the stark desert landscape gives way to an underground world of intricate tombs carved deep into the limestone cliffs. The tour includes visits to three tombs (excluding King Tutankhamun’s tomb, which requires a separate ticket).

El Deir el-Bahari

Next, you’ll visit the breathtaking mortuary temple of Queen Hatshepsut, known as El Deir el-Bahari. This majestic structure, built into the cliffs at Deir el-Bahari, is a testament to one of Egypt’s most powerful and influential female pharaohs.

As you approach the temple, you’ll be struck by its unique design. Unlike the enclosed structures of other Egyptian temples, Hatshepsut’s temple features open, colonnaded terraces that ascend in a series of ramps. The effect is both grand and harmonious, blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.

The Colossi of Memnon

Two massive stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III. Standing at about 18 meters (60 feet) high, these imposing figures have guarded the entrance to Amenhotep’s now-vanished mortuary temple for over 3,400 years.

Despite weathering and damage over the millennia, the statues remain an impressive sight. Each is carved from a single block of quartzite sandstone, weighing an estimated 720 tons each. They depict Amenhotep III in a seated position, hands resting on his knees, gazing eastward toward the rising sun.

What to Bring and Wear

  • Comfortable Shoes: You’ll be doing a lot of walking, often on uneven terrain.
  • Sun Protection: Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential.
  • Water: Bring plenty to stay hydrated in the desert climate.
  • Light, Loose Clothing: Respect local customs by covering shoulders and knees.
  • Camera: Photography is allowed in most areas (exceptions will be noted by your guide).

Karnak Temple Complex

Crossing back to Luxor’s East Bank, you’ll explore the vast Karnak Temple Complex – the largest religious building ever constructed. This sprawling site, developed over more than 2,000 years, covers about 200 acres and encompasses several temples, chapels, and other structures.

As you enter through the avenue of ram-headed sphinxes, you’ll feel dwarfed by the massive pylons and towering columns.

Luxor Temple

The final stop on your tour is the elegant Luxor Temple. Unlike other temples in Thebes, Luxor Temple wasn’t dedicated to a cult god or a deified version of the pharaoh in death. Instead, it was dedicated to the rejuvenation of kingship, possibly the place where many of the pharaohs of the New Kingdom were crowned.

As you approach the temple, you’ll notice:

  • The massive entrance pylon built by Ramses II, flanked by his colossal statues
  • The 25-meter high pink granite obelisk (the mate of which now stands in Paris)
  • The long colonnade of graceful papyrus columns leading into the temple proper

Immerse Yourself in Ancient Splendor

The Luxor’s Highlights Day Tour offers more than just a sightseeing experience; it’s a journey through millennia of history and culture. As you walk in the footsteps of pharaohs and priests, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the achievements of ancient Egyptian civilization.

  1. Engage with your guide: Don’t hesitate to ask questions. Our knowledgeable guides are passionate about Egyptian history and can offer fascinating insights and anecdotes.
